Te whenua o Te Karetu

 

TAWAEWAE the elder brother of POMARE I (b.1760 - d.1826)  <<>>  went onto the lands of KARETU with TE KAPOTAI (Hapu of Waikare), to dig fernroot food. Seeing the high quality of the fernroot TAWAEWAE became interested in obtaining these lands. On his return to Kororareka he met TE TORU, te Rangatira o Te Kapotai and he asked if he could acquire the lands of Karetu.

 THE 1ST PURCHASE TAWAEWAE gave TE TORU Two Mere Pounamu payment. One named TE HURI O TAINUI and the other named TE RAUOKIEKIE. THE 1ST PURCHASE TAWAEWAE gave TE TORU Two Mere Pounamu payment. One named TE HURI O TAINUI and the other named TE RAUOKIEKIE. THE 1ST PURCHASE TAWAEWAE gave TE TORU Two Mere Pounamu payment. One named TE HURI O TAINUI and the other named TE RAUOKIEKIE.

One named TE HURI O TAINUI and the other named TE RAUOKIEKIE.

TAWAEWAE obtained the land, it was settled by his younger Brother POMARE I (POMARENUI) his people and his slaves.

POMARE I converted the land of Karetu into one huge mahingakai growing corn potatoes kumara watermelons and Pigs for Trade.

After the death of Pomare II son of HAKI elder sister of Pomare I  <<>>  Te Kapotai requested a further payment for the lands of Karetu.

DEATH OF TIAHO POMARE (d.1892)

After the death of Tiaho in 1892  <<>>   at the invitation of Wiremu Pomare (eldest son of Pomare II) that the Hapu of Te Kapotai, Te Uri Taniwha, Te Uriroroi, Ngati Wai, Ngati Hine and Te Uri Ongaonga gathered at Karetu.

 It was at that hui that Wiremu Te Tete of Te Kapotai stood up and said ...

WIREMU TE TETE of Te Kapotai “Ka ki ia :  “Ko tenei whenua ko Te Karetu. Kua oti ke i mua i a Tawaewae rano i raua ko Te Toru.  Kore rawa he tangata o Te Kapotai o tetahi atu hapu ranei i tu mai ki te whakahe”.

Concerning the Lands of Te Karetu, it had already been settled with TAWAEWAE and TE TORU. No Person from Te Kapotai or any other Hapu can stand and disagree that”
